Joe Dever Award

The Joe Dever Award for the ‘best transmedia IP in fantasy’ was established in 2017 to commemorate the passing of Joe Dever (Chingford, 12 February 1956 – 29 November 2016), game book author and lifelong friend of Lucca Comics & Games.

Dever, best known for the saga Lone Wolf, published in Italy as Lupo Solitario, was a game designer, author, and above all a creator of worlds and composer of languages. He was a great supporter of the festival’s primary value, community, and in that perspective, the award dedicated to him is not designed to reward the best game book, but aims to enhance the dream of participating in the author’s creation, and its diffusion in our country.

The Joe Dever Award is assigned by Lucca Crea, through an appointed jury, to the company that owns the winning IP (Intellectual property) and to the local companies that have transposed and disseminated products related to that particular IP in our territory. The prize is presented at the awards ceremony at the Teatro del Giglio during Lucca Comics & Games.

In order to be eligible for the award, an IP must refer to an imaginary universe that can be explored by the user through several media, and must have a product published in the year of the award’s assignation. The aforementioned product must not belong to the IP’s medium of origin, and must have been localised in Italy in the year of nomination.

The Jury, appointed annually by Lucca Crea, is composed of three special members, i.e. one member of the Dever family; Emanuele Vietina (Director of Lucca Comics & Games); and the Award Coordinator. These members are joined by a President, in office for three years with the possibility of renewal, and by three to five ordinary members, in office for a maximum of two years. Members of the Jury ending their term of office may only be reappointed at the end of a break term.
